Firstly the A-Line wedding dress. This is a classic shape with the skirt part flowing from the waist in (obviously) the shape of an A.

Then there is the full or ballerina wedding dress. There is usually a tight bodice which is fitted flowing into a full skirt that has plenty of volume. This type is the traditional ‘Cinderella’ dress.

The fishtail dress, often referred to as a ‘mermaid’ dress is tightly fitting at the top and figure hugging all the way down to the knees where it then flows out.

The strapless wedding dress does exactly what it says on the tin-has no straps! It is usually a corset style on top with various shapes and sized skirts at the bottom.

Apart from these types of designs, there are many more styles besides including, spaghetti straps, v-neck, halter-neck, long sleeved, short sleeved, column and empire line dresses.

The most important thing to remember is to go on instinct. Browse wedding dress styles on line until you find a dozen or so that you really like. Then print them off and go to a wedding dress shop and try similar styled ones on. At this point it is important to take your friends along with you as they can give you an honest opinion as to which one suits best.

If you are looking for a really unique dress then it is best to start thinking about colours and materials that will provide you with the look you want. Firstly, if you have something specific in mind then it is best to go to a dress maker to get it make for you. Start collecting pictures of styles, colours and fabrics so your dress maker can help get a better idea of exactly what you want.

Many people want to incorporate a specific theme that they have chosen for their wedding day into their wedding dress, this could be anything from having a subtle brown or gold hue in the dress to represent an autumn theme to having a full on dramatic theme such as ‘Halloween’ where the dress could be very dramatic using rich purples, reds, greens or even blacks in gorgeous sumptuous fabrics such as velvet, lace or thick silks.

If you do not wish to have your unique wedding dress made and would prefer to buy one directly then there are plenty of companies out there that provide every type of dress from subtle tones to beautiful black and white silk and lace gowns, perfect to compliment any wedding with a slightly Gothic edge.

The most important thing about choosing the right wedding dress is to choose one that you love. So whether you already know exactly the dress for you or you have a little more to do, please, above all enjoy the process…..You only plan on doing it once!
