The fairytale wedding theme remains one of the most popular and most common theme chosen for weddings. It can be as subtle as having a traditional dress and cake or as literal as having a large castle shaped cake, a horse and carriage as transport or even choosing a particular fairytale story to theme a wedding on.

Why this theme continues to remain popular is probably due to the romanticised ideas from childhood about weddings that all little girls have due to all the fairytale books and films they had such as Cinderella, sleeping beauty and snow white etc.

If Cinderella was the the theme for a wedding then the general colours of the day would include white with gold and blue. Scrolls would be used for invitations, a horse and carriage with white ponies and footmen. The brides dress would be a white ball-gown with blue crystals and embroidery. The bridesmaids would be wearing blue dresses and and the reception would be held in a castle with the wedding cake being multi-tiered with prince and princess figures on top.

The Gothic Wedding

People who may choose a Gothic wedding include those who love the style, whether or not they are a true Goth, a Gothic theme wedding ceremony is guaranteed to create a dramatic effect.
The Goth movement came about from the punk scene with its main ideas of rejecting all that is mainstream so a Gothic themed wedding weather just for the style or the principles behind it is going to create a unique and dramatic atmosphere.

Ways of creating this atmosphere include the colour scheme, namely the use of blacks, navy blue, ruby reds, greens or purples. The wedding gown will vary depending on your own personal taste, lots of velvet fabrics may be used in the above colours.

The location is obviously very important when trying to create the required atmosphere. Older locations such as castle weddings or older buildings are ideal and the decoration with the use of candles and atmospheric music will all add together to make a Gothic themed wedding spectacular.

Medieval themed wedding

Medieval themed weddings are another take on the fairytale wedding with its “princess dress” and “knight in shining armour” costume based on Tudor or Elizabethan dress. A great banquet feast will be expected by your guests when hosting a medieval wedding that traditionally includes turkey, venison, mutton served on wooden plates.

Other ways to create this western theme other than getting married in the mid west of America, would again be to make the colour scheme, reception decorations, transportation(covered wagon or horseback) and music (country and western) all fitting.

Some couples choose to base their wedding themes and colours on the season of the year that they are getting married.

Spring

Using spring as a theme they may choose pinks, yellows, greens and other pastel shades as a base for their decorations. Lots of flowers may also be used both in the accessories of the bride and bridesmaids and in the decoration of the ceremony and reception areas.

Some people may choose to have an outside wedding amongst the blossoming spring flowers to celebrate this season.

Summer

Winter themed weddings that take place around the Christmas period may include Christmas themed colours and decoration. This means that the use of reds and greens and all things Christmas can help to give a really special, magical atmosphere to your wedding.
